Sony Music News | Sony Music Entertainment and Simon Cowell launch new global venture: Syco
The new venture will own all of the existing Syco television and music assets, which include the global TV franchises 'The X Factor' and 'Got Talent', as well as superstar artists such as Leona Lewis, Susan Boyle and Il Divo. The new venture, which will continue to use the 'Syco' name, will be co-owned by Sony Music and a Simon Cowell-owned company. Syco will be based in London and will also have offices in Los Angeles.
As the first project under the new Syco banner, Fox Television announced (on January 11th) that it will launch the U.S. version of the worldwide hit TV show, The X Factor, in the fall of 2011. Cowell will serve as both executive producer and judge on the U.S. version of the show.
The X Factor is a Syco-owned television format, which currently airs in 17 countries and has been the #1 UK entertainment show for the last three years, reaching record UK audiences in 2009 of 20 million with 60% audience share. The X Factor is the No.1 music- entertainment format in Europe.
In addition to The X Factor, Syco is also the owner of the Got Talent TV format which currently airs in 27 countries and is the UK's most successful TV format export. In 2009, 'Britain's Got Talent' launched the global music career of Susan Boyle, whose debut album, I Dreamed A Dream, sold over 8 million albums in six weeks, making it the world's biggest selling album of 2009 and the fastest selling album in history.
Syco is also the record label home for such diverse international recording stars as Leona Lewis and Il Divo. Cowell has worked with artists selling more than 180 million albums and delivered more than 150 No.1 records. In 2009, Cowell was named No. 1 in Hollywood Reporter's Top 50 Most Powerful in Reality TV and one of Entertainment Weekly's Top Entertainers of the Year.
"I have had a fantastic relationship with Sony for many years and I'm delighted we are launching this venture together," Cowell said.
"Over the past 20 years, Simon Cowell has been a great partner and is an integral part of the Sony Music global family. We are extremely excited to be able to continue and further develop our relationship with Simon, and significantly grow the Syco venture," said Rolf Schmidt-Holtz, CEO, Sony Music Entertainment.
"Simon Cowell is one of the most prominent and successful creative music and television executives in the entertainment business today. This new venture will allow Sony Music and all Sony divisions to develop and pursue a host of new opportunities with this supremely talented individual," said Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman, CEO and President, Sony Corporation.
"I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to extend our long and mutually beneficial partnership with Simon. He is an inspiring and stimulating business partner and working with him closely over the last 10 years has been an absolute pleasure. With the launch of The X Factor in the US, we look forward to replicating the unprecedented success the show has had in the UK globally," said Ged Doherty, Chairman and CEO, Sony Music Entertainment UK.
New music: Depeche Mode ? Puppets (Ryksopp remix)
This reworking of a track from Depeche Mode's debut album turns Vince Clarke's paean to paranoia into something sparklier
In June, synth-pop legends Depeche Mode will release Remixes 2: 81 ? 11, which, as the title suggests, is their second remix collection (the first was released in 2004). It features new and classic reworkings, including Stargate's take on Personal Jesus, plus contributions from Eric Prydz, Unkle and M83. The three-disc edition includes arrangements by Peter Bjorn and John, Dan the Automator, and original members Vince Clarke and Alan Wilder. For Puppets ? taken from Depeche Mode's debut album, Speak & Spell ? they've enlisted Norwegian duo Ryksopp, who turn Clarke's paean to paranoia into something sparklier, fleshing out the icy synths with intricate beats.

Moon Wiring Club's fitting tribute to Wills and Kate
There's a royal wedding on, apparently, but how best to soundtrack this great event? With an album about a fox marrying a phantom cat-bride, set to a reggae beat, of course ...
The royal wedding has prompted many musical tributes, from the balladeering of Blake to Taking Over the Dancefloor by Nadia Oh, who, presumably unlike Carol Ann Duffy, rhymes "Kate Middleton" with a popular tequila brand. But best of all is Moon Wiring Club's Somewhere a Fox Is Getting Married, which refracts the already odd pomp and ceremony into a parallel dimension where "greedy, wryly unwholesome, non-paying animal-faced entities" attend a phantom wedding on 31 April 1911.
"Often in charity shops you'll find royal wedding souvenir LPs," explains Ian Hodgson, aka Moon Wiring Club. "My favourite one is for Princess Anne and Mark Phillips: you have this lushly produced gatefold souvenir of a marriage that didn't work out. But this year I can't see there being an official BBC souvenir vinyl LP, so I thought I'd do one. People's reactions are just, 'I hate the royal family' or 'Isn't this absolutely joyous', but no one is saying, 'Well, what is this?'. The whole thing is quite peculiar.
"There are centuries-old carriages that have been locked away and are brought out just for the royal wedding," Hodgson continues. "You see aristocrats you never see in other circumstances; it seems to be the same people who are dusted down and brought out each time. And you see the magazines at the newsstands referring to it as a 'fairytale wedding'. I find that interesting ? a lot of fairytales are incredibly disturbing. So when you have these headlines that say 'inside the fairytale', my thought was: 'What if it really was inside a fairytale?'"
Simon Reynolds discussed MWC's work on this blog recently (he's also written about the royal wedding, oddly enough) but to be brief: Hodgson's sample-heavy music (composed entirely on a PlayStation 2) is set in Clinkskell, a fictional village full of sinister spirits, beautiful women and quaint sweet shops. His last album focused on a card game in which the winner would get to marry into royalty; on this album, the fox-faced spirit who won is claiming his prize, a dotty feline called Princess Jackie. "Composing music for an insane, fashionable phantom cat-bride, set to a reggae beat, or for what a cavalier fox is thinking while being trapped in a hat-prison: I can do that," says Ian.
The resulting imagery and music is rich with references to English folklore and aristocratic idiosyncrasies, from phantom weddings in the Lake District to links between the ruling class and the lowly fox. "I'm not making a political statement, but one of Britain's most recognisable, popular creatures is something that is brutally hunted by the aristocracy, so if the fox plays a trick and becomes heir to the throne, he's disturbing things," says Ian. "In fact, since I decided that the groom would be a fox, I've noticed that Prince William has started to look more like one. I was in the Co-op and he was on a biscuit tin, looking a bit foxy."
Has Moon Wiring Club let loose a mischievous vulpine spirit, keen to hijack Kate and Wills's big day? Probably not. But amid the bland patriotism and kneejerk republicanism, he has managed to capture some of the gilt-edged, inbred weirdness of this rare national event.
Somewhere a Fox Is Getting Married is available to pre-order now as a souvenir LP with commemorative poster. You can hear Sly Gavotte, a track from the album, here.

NKOTBSB Perform On 'Dancing With The Stars'
NKOTBSB, that is, the combination of New Kids On The Block and Backstreet Boys, took the stage last night (April 26th) on 'Dancing With The Stars' to promote their upcoming co-headlining North American tour which kicks-off on May 25th in Rosemont, Illinois. The 'massive' boyband first performed their joint single "Don't Turn Out The Lights", they sounded pretty good and the little choreography was nice! I was suprised!, and later returned to the DWTS stage to perform their biggest individual hits, "Step By Step" for NKOTB and "I Want It That Way" for BSB. Wow, that tour sounds like fun! It'll be hard to make the setlist tho.

Katy Perry Performs 'E.T' On American Idol
Pop star Katy Perry performed her latest #1 "E.T" live on 'American Idol' last night (April 21st) - The Dr Luke, Ammo, Max Martin creation is single number four from the California singer's second studio album "Teenage Dream" - This is really unbelievable. Four number ones so far, a pop masterpiece album, and Katy got ZERO Grammys this year. Anyways....commenting on the 'Idol' performance on Thursday, it was cool! The staging and costumes helped get into the song's vibe, and Ms Perry sounded fantastic IMO. The low points, Kanye West's presence was really unnecessary, as he only rapped for 10 seconds, and then he just stood there doing nothing until the end of the song. Also Katy's choreography was way too minimal, almost lifeless. Anyhow, looking foward for more "E.T" TV performances. Hopefully Katy will introduce a few new tweaks to make it more exciting. "The California Dreams Tour" hits Australia next week.

Michael Jackson Naked Autopsy Photos Used In Trial
Scene and heard: Moombahton
When tech-house producer Dave Nada slowed down his DJ set to 108bpm, it was to appease the reggaeton-loving crowd. But chance would see a new global bass genre being born
Rarely has one man's attempt to save his skin been so fruitful. After turning up to play at his cousin's house party, tech house DJ and producer Dave Nada worked out pretty quickly that the Dirty Dutch House floorfillers he'd brought wouldn't go down too well with a bunch of rowdy kids going crazy to reggaeton.
Keen to leave in one piece, he took a risk and slowed down Afrojack's remix of Silvio Ecomo and DJ Chuckie's track Moombah to reggaeton speed and crossed his fingers. "It worked like a charm ? the kids went mental. I was blown away by how big it sounded at that tempo," recalls Nada. Barely over a year later, his eureka moment has seen moombahton getting underground buzz everywhere from the states to eastern Europe ? and now Britain's getting involved too, with Radio 1 already offering full support to a genre that has only one official release to its name.
The original template may have been the searing electronica of Dutch house mixed with the dembow rhythm of reggaeton and latin cumbia, but moombahton's a sound that has an ability to assimilate other genres, yet still sound utterly unmistakable: "I like to describe it as mid-tempo global bass music. It draws from house and reggaeton, but also dubstep, indie, UK funky, Baltimore club, soul, etc. The only real rule is that the tempo should be about 108 bpm," says Nada.
It's a wide-eyed, Balearic approach that's scarcely been seen since the early days of the Heavenly Social, and has already seen it inspire an almost Dionysian response Stateside: "Every time there is a massive party it's a wrap, we are going in at 10," says David Heartbreak, another of the scene's key men. "It's always nuts. DC ? nuts, SXSW ? nuts, Miami ? nuts. People climbing on speakers. It's just something about this music that gets people wild."
Radio 1 DJ Toddla T has ceaselessly championed the likes of Nada, Dutch prodigy Munchi and LA's Dillon Francis, whose Westside EP also caught the attention of Annie Mac, while Zane Lowe has just pegged Francis's remix of Toddla's Take It Back as his hottest record in the world. UK producers like Smutlee are looking to add a British spin, and nights like Fiyapowa and Club Tropicana LDN are being prepped for the summer, while elsewhere dubstep doyens like Skrillex are getting involved, as are big-shot mainstream DJs like Laidback Luke.
"I think people just see the endless potential," says Nada, who's soon to release the scene-defining Blow Your Head compilation on Diplo's Mad Decent, and is working on original moombahton tracks as part of Nadastrom. "It really is a versatile sound with an uplifting vibe. And most importantly, it's fun to dance to. Who can't relate to that?"
