Win Tickets to Crazy Legs / Short Sets vs Long Sets
Long sets. Something most DJs outside of house and techno will tell you they wish they could play, but due to the cut-throat nature of promoting in the UK, generally don't get to. It can definitely be frustrating: promoter wants to ensure his line-up will attract a capacity crowd, and (correctly) figures that if 1 big name is likely to pull in a certain amount of people, 2 big names will likely bring in a bunch more, and 3 big names will guarantee everyone will be blown away by the line-up he's put together - GOD b2b ALLAH b2b BUDDHA??? OMG DEFO REACHIN FAM!!!
The downside though is that this generally means everyone gets 60 minutes to do their thangs, which assuming you play 3 minutes of each tune, only gives you 20 tunes to work with. And when you've got such a short period of time, with comparatively few tunes to get through, AND you have another 3 DJs in the same boat - well, no one wants to the DJ who goes on and plays a subtle, nuanced set that doesn't really have time to get going, when everyone else is going to SMASH IT, right? So all too often, everyone draws for their biggest tunes and you get a succession of super intense, super hype sets, that often start at full intensity and stay there, until the next guy comes on and does the same thing.
Don't get me wrong, this can be often make for a super exciting night, but sometimes as a DJ, you wish you could have more control over the night - so you could take things from maybe a slower, groovier feel earlier on, gradually set a tone, and then build into something a bit more intense as time goes on. I guess it's a bit like Premiership football - we've mastered the art of full-on super-raging entertainment, but maybe Barca are doing something a bit more thought out?
Anyways, the reason for such musings is that Crazy Legs are rewarding the non-Glastonbury heads with a secret line up this Saturday - 2 massive (unrevealed, but definitely massive) names, playing b2b for 5 hrs. As DJs, that should let them try stuff out that maybe they don't get the chance to in their usual headline slots; as punters, we get to hear a lot more of what makes them tick.

Beyonce Shuts It Down At 2011 Glastonbury!
Beyonce gave the performance of her life last night (June 26th) as she closed down the 2011 Glastonbury Festival in England - Queen B silenced critics saying she wasn't 'suitable' for main headline by delivering a high-energy, brilliant, emotional concert on Sunday - Beyonce became the first woman in more than 20 years to headline Glastonbury and the first African-American female ever. The R&B star who had been rehearsing ten hours a day for Glastonbury performed an extensive setlist that included hits from her back catalogue, a Destiny's Child's medley and new tracks from her new album "4". HANDS DOWN! She rocked it! What a performer, and what a performance! So glad to see the crowd enjoyed every second of it.

Free Mungo's HiFi tunes
This past year I've become a total convert to the delights of Mungo's Hi Fi. They're down in Bristol fairly frequently, and I've got to say the first time I really experienced their rig, I was completely blown away. Their own tunes are clearly fine-tuned to sound ridiculously heavy on this setup, and I'd say are also probably some of the dubstep tracks that are the 'most true' to the original dub sound - just deep, heavy rollers, with no concessions to rave, or wobble, or any of that.

Hailing from Chingford, Essex The Rifles have come a long way since their first gig at London�s legendry Bull & Gate pub in Kentish Town.Sharing an ashtray and a glass of bourbon with one of the most unique and charismatic musical talents around, American-born hellraiser Rasp Thorne introduces me to some friends from New York.The early nineties was awash with clean-cut, bubblegum pop acts particular of the boy band variety, but there was one modest all male trio who dared to break the mould. Renowned for penning some of the catchiest lyrics and reintroducing rock to pop, Let Loose were also one of the only UK groups of their time whose line-up could all genuinely play instruments. Their hit single �Crazy For You� charted at number 2 in 1994, but was kept from the top spot by Glaswegian crooners Wet Wet Wet and their cover of The Troggs �Love is All Around�. The band went on to release a further two albums together before calling it a day in 1997. To date the single �Crazy For You� has sold more than 600,000 copies globally and lead singer Richie Wermerling has maintained a consistent dialogue with fans online who have continued to push for a comeback. A passing comment from Take That�s Gary Barlow published in The Sun in 2008 reunited Richie and drummer Lee Murray and the group staged their first comeback gig last year. Back by popular demand the band have played numerous gigs this year and have a further three scheduled this summer. Victoria Dillingham of Music News caught up with original drummer and now father of two - Lee Murray - in his hometown of Watford to talk about the comeback, forthcoming gigs and plans for the Let Loose moving forward. Music News caught up with Two Spot Gobi�s lead singer James Robinson following their recent set in London to find out more the new album, their success thus far and supporting John Mraz on his European and US tour. Hailing from Chingford, Essex The Rifles have come a long way since their first gig at London�s legendry Bull & Gate pub in Kentish Town.Sharing an ashtray and a glass of bourbon with one of the most unique and charismatic musical talents around, American-born hellraiser Rasp Thorne introduces me to some friends from New York.The early nineties was awash with clean-cut, bubblegum pop acts particular of the boy band variety, but there was one modest all male trio who dared to break the mould. Renowned for penning some of the catchiest lyrics and reintroducing rock to pop, Let Loose were also one of the only UK groups of their time whose line-up could all genuinely play instruments. Their hit single �Crazy For You� charted at number 2 in 1994, but was kept from the top spot by Glaswegian crooners Wet Wet Wet and their cover of The Troggs �Love is All Around�. The band went on to release a further two albums together before calling it a day in 1997. To date the single �Crazy For You� has sold more than 600,000 copies globally and lead singer Richie Wermerling has maintained a consistent dialogue with fans online who have continued to push for a comeback. A passing comment from Take That�s Gary Barlow published in The Sun in 2008 reunited Richie and drummer Lee Murray and the group staged their first comeback gig last year. Back by popular demand the band have played numerous gigs this year and have a further three scheduled this summer. Victoria Dillingham of Music News caught up with original drummer and now father of two - Lee Murray - in his hometown of Watford to talk about the comeback, forthcoming gigs and plans for the Let Loose moving forward. Sony Music News | Sony Classical pianist Lang Lang records soundtrack for Sony Christmas TV campaign
Lang Lang, one of the world's greatest classical musicians, has recorded 'A Sony Christmas Carol', the music for the Sony 'VAT-back' Christmas TV advert. This Christmas (28th October to December 24th) consumers will be able to get the VAT back on a wide range of Sony products in a move to help the nation save money on Christmas presents ahead of the forthcoming UK VAT rise in January. The initiative is supported by an advertising campaign featuring actor Sir Derek Jacobi as Ebenezer Scrooge in a modern day portrayal of the Christmas classic 'A Christmas Carol' and includes an epic 2-minute 'mini-movie' version.
The score for the advert includes a virtuosic piano part which was written especially for Lang Lang, one of the world's finest pianists and most inspirational musicians, by leading young film composer Ilan Eshkeri, whose scores include Stardust, Kick-Ass and The Young Victoria. It was supported by a 35 piece orchestra and recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios. Sony Music News | Sony Music Supports UK Record Store Day 2011
Record Store Day is a celebration of independent record stores and the way they contribute to music, with this day seeing them secure hundreds of exclusive items from record labels which are only available through participating stores. A global event, Record Store Day sees over a thousand record stores taking part across 18 countries and four continents. More than 150 UK indie record stores took part in last year's event and over 180 are signed up for this year.
This year's Record Store Day takes place on Saturday 16th April. Sony Music has lined up its best ever series of releases to support the event. Additionally Columbia Records' The View have recorded the anthem for the event in the form of their new release I Need That Record.
