Sony Music News | Sony Music Entertainment and Simon Cowell launch new global venture: Syco

Simon Cowell and Sony Music Entertainment today announced the creation of a new long-term global venture to focus on the production and exploitation of music, television, film and digital content.

The new venture will own all of the existing Syco television and music assets, which include the global TV franchises 'The X Factor' and 'Got Talent', as well as superstar artists such as Leona Lewis, Susan Boyle and Il Divo. The new venture, which will continue to use the 'Syco' name, will be co-owned by Sony Music and a Simon Cowell-owned company. Syco will be based in London and will also have offices in Los Angeles.

As the first project under the new Syco banner, Fox Television announced (on January 11th) that it will launch the U.S. version of the worldwide hit TV show, The X Factor, in the fall of 2011. Cowell will serve as both executive producer and judge on the U.S. version of the show.

The X Factor is a Syco-owned television format, which currently airs in 17 countries and has been the #1 UK entertainment show for the last three years, reaching record UK audiences in 2009 of 20 million with 60% audience share. The X Factor is the No.1 music- entertainment format in Europe.

In addition to The X Factor, Syco is also the owner of the Got Talent TV format which currently airs in 27 countries and is the UK's most successful TV format export. In 2009, 'Britain's Got Talent' launched the global music career of Susan Boyle, whose debut album, I Dreamed A Dream, sold over 8 million albums in six weeks, making it the world's biggest selling album of 2009 and the fastest selling album in history.

Syco is also the record label home for such diverse international recording stars as Leona Lewis and Il Divo. Cowell has worked with artists selling more than 180 million albums and delivered more than 150 No.1 records. In 2009, Cowell was named No. 1 in Hollywood Reporter's Top 50 Most Powerful in Reality TV and one of Entertainment Weekly's Top Entertainers of the Year.

"I have had a fantastic relationship with Sony for many years and I'm delighted we are launching this venture together," Cowell said.

"Over the past 20 years, Simon Cowell has been a great partner and is an integral part of the Sony Music global family. We are extremely excited to be able to continue and further develop our relationship with Simon, and significantly grow the Syco venture," said Rolf Schmidt-Holtz, CEO, Sony Music Entertainment.

"Simon Cowell is one of the most prominent and successful creative music and television executives in the entertainment business today. This new venture will allow Sony Music and all Sony divisions to develop and pursue a host of new opportunities with this supremely talented individual," said Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman, CEO and President, Sony Corporation.

"I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to extend our long and mutually beneficial partnership with Simon. He is an inspiring and stimulating business partner and working with him closely over the last 10 years has been an absolute pleasure. With the launch of The X Factor in the US, we look forward to replicating the unprecedented success the show has had in the UK globally," said Ged Doherty, Chairman and CEO, Sony Music Entertainment UK.

New music: Spice feat. Missy Elliott ? Fun

Missy Elliott seemed missing in action, but returns to drop a verse on this dancehall cut

It's hard to fathom that Missy Elliott is 40 years old and that her last album was released over six years ago. The former is a surprise because there's always been a youthful exuberance to everything she does (plus, she seems to live in a tracksuit) and the latter because there was a time around the end of the 90s and the start of the noughties where a year didn't go by without at least one killer single (Get Ur Freak On and Work It: surely two of the best tracks of recent years?). In June it was announced that Elliott had been battling Graves' disease, an illness which left her exhausted and unable, she said, to even hold a pen to write. So it's welcome news that there's some new music to enjoy, even if it's only a guest spot on someone else's song. Spice is a Jamaican dancehall star and the appropriately named Fun was initially completed sans Elliott, with the rapper adding an extra verse and the song's hook, much to Spice's surprise. "One day my manager played the song for me, and I didn't know about the remix, and when I heard Missy on it, I was over the roof," she told the Jamaica Star. "Missy ripped it up. The beat is a dancehall beat, it's not trying to be hip-hop and she did well on it." For the video, Spice frolics in a giant paddling pool, rides a horse and dances in front of a giant bottle. Much like we did at the family BBQ at the weekend.

Hudson Mohawke - Satin Panthers clips

Hudmo_blog

After the slice of pure, distilled amazingness that was 'Fuse', I had to confess to feeling a bit let down by the full LP 'Butter' when it came out, and I'd rushed down to Bristol HMV to cop it.  Still though, it was clear that when he was on form, there's no one to touch Hud Mo for uplifting, innovative, neon hip hop and funk.  And to prove it he's just upped some clips of his next EP 'Satin Panthers' - which is sounding sick.  Those first and last tracks in particular - I don't know what they're called but they sound fantastic.  I'm a born-again fan.  The EP is out on Warp in August - keep an eye out.

Sony Music News | Global Stars Helping Haiti

Some of the biggest names in UK and American music have joined forces to record an emotive cover of the REM classic Everybody Hurts, to raise money for charities supporting the relief efforts in Haiti. The final line up of featured artists is: Mariah Carey, Jon Bon Jovi, Robbie Williams, Kylie, Rod Stewart, Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke, Miley Cyrus, Take That, Joe McElderry, Cheryl Cole, JLS, Mika, Michael Buble, James Blunt, James Morrison, Susan Boyle, and Westlife.

The single is available to download from February 7th, and in stores on CD from February 8th. All proceeds will be split 50/50 between DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) and The Sun newspaper's 'Helping Haiti' appeal. Prime Minister Gordon Brown has pledged to waive VAT on the single. The Haitian earthquake, which occurred on 12th January 2010 measuring a catastrophic 7.0 on the richter scale, is already estimated to have caused the deaths of over 250,000 people. 250,000 are in need of urgent aid and more than 2 million people are estimated homeless and in need of long term support to help rebuild their lives.

To donate directly to the DEC appeal, visit dec.org.uk. The CD single can be pre-ordered from Play.com, Amazon and HMV. You can hear a clip of the song on the websites of several of the artists involved, e.g. alexandraburkeofficial.com.

Simon Cowell, who is organizing the recording and release of the record for Haiti said: "We have a short time to do this but already we are getting some fantastic support. Right now this is an absolute priority for us all, the people of Haiti need as much help as we can give them as soon as possible, every day the situation becomes more desperate."

Robbie Williams said: "I'm very honoured to be asked to contribute to the single. We can all do something to help the people of Haiti - and I urge everyone to do what they can."

Mariah Carey said: "When Simon Cowell approached me to take part in the charity single for Haiti I had absolutely no hesitation and I said yes instantly. Obviously we are all extremely saddened to see the pain and the hurt of the people of Haiti and I feel grateful as an artist to be able to help. I hope 'Everybody Hurts' helps to raise a very large amount of funds so the people of Haiti can rebuild their shattered lives. My heart goes out to every single person that has suffered and been affected by this tragedy."

Cheryl Cole said "It's heartbreaking to see what is happening in Haiti. Hopefully the money from Everybody Hurts will help the people of Haiti rebuild their lives."
JLS star Ortise Williams, who lost relatives in the quake said: "The tragedy is very close to my heart."We hope to raise as much money as possible. It's great to be working with such talented artists, all pulling together to make a difference through song."

Alexandra Burke said: "It's truly devastating what has happened in Haiti and if I can help in anyway then I will. This song will bring awareness to the suffering of the innocent people of Haiti and help them rebuild their lives and homes. When these natural disasters occur, we have to work together to make a difference. Please support us"

Kylie Minogue said: "My heart goes out to all those affected in Haiti - the loss they have suffered is incomprehensible. I'm honoured to be part of this project knowing funds will be delivered to the source."

Rod Stewart said: I can't think of a more fitting song than 'Everybody Hurts' to convey the unimaginable tragedy that is Haiti. I hope the record sales raise a lot of money because the country certainly needs it.

James Morrison said: "I'm so proud and honoured to be part of something so huge, which can hopefully go some way towards helping the poor people who are suffering in Haiti.

Joe McElderry said: "It's an honour to be a part of the Haiti charity single. It's truly devastating what has happened over there and I want to do anything I can to help and raise money. It's great to be apart of such an amazing line up who have all taken time out of their schedule to help with this tragic cause"

Susan Boyle said: "The Haiti earthquake has caused devastation and suffering that most of us will never experience nor could imagine. I feel privileged to be a part of such a wonderful project that will raise money to help the country."
Disasters Emergency Committee, Chief Executive Brendan Gormley said: "We are absolutely delighted to help those recording, producing and buying this charity single make a difference in Haiti. More and more water, food, household items and medical supplies are getting through to the earthquake survivors. Buying the charity single will greatly aid our work and help us work with survivors in Haiti to rebuild new lives from the ruins."

The Horrors ? Skying

In 2005, The Horrors emerged from the shadows of some Tim Burton film wearing copious amounts of eye liner and jeans that were slightly too tight. Skying is another step forward for the boys, as an impatient fan I?m already yearning to see where they go from this. Words by Callum McCulloch.

Wheels - George Runciman, Felix Howes, Yacob Andersen, Stirling Mitchell

Wheels are George Runciman (Vocals/Guitar), Felix Howes (Guitar), Yacob Andersen (Bass) and Stirling Mitchell (Drums), a band of fresh-faced London boys who emulate Britpop cool and create credible guitar pop - think Blur, not Busted. Their influences span at least five decades and include David BowieToploader in their short space of time took and held music listeners by the gills, they teased us, shook us around and then (before they could embed themselves totally in our psyche) abruptly departed the scene. Their huge hit Hey Soul Sister has managed a four month stay in the UK charts, a rare feat when one considers that nowadays songs hardlyLondon based grungers Japanese Voyeurs all set to roll into the grubby mitts of rock stardom following the release of their new album, which is yet to be named, later in the year. At only 24 years of age Miles Kane has done more than most in a full career, he's been a guitarist in The Little Flames, lead singer of The Rascals, co-frontman of Last Shadow Puppets and now inThe Scottish Alternative Music Awards is a ceremony and show designed to honour and celebrate the non-Biffy Clyros - the alternative and best new bands in Scotland. As the nominees are announced and the SAMA website growing each day, I caught up with Founder Richy Muirhead to find out more about the event. Howard Marks has been creating waves for some years now. His tales of drug smuggling have become the stuff of legend. After the success of their debut album Helium, festival favourites Urban Myth Club are back with brand new album Open Up. Their new single Best of Me is released in April. I had a chat to three members of the group and this is what they had to say:Numerous bands claim to have broken the late 1980s Indie Brit-pop mould, but few have weathered the last two decades like The Charlatans. And if 11 studio albums, and 17 Top 30 singles havent yet convinced critics of their rightful place in music history, their new album out on March 21st will. Tim Burgess and the crew are back, this time with a double deluxe version of their 1999 chart-topping Gold album, Us and Us Only. The new and revised edition features remixes from Lionrock and Jagz Kooner of favourites such as My Beautiful Friends, and live footage taken from the bands much talked about performances at Reading, Later with Jools Holland and Mark Radcliffe and The Evening Sessions. The orginal release of the album 12 years ago marked a poignant move from their old record label, Beggars Banquet to Island Records. It was also The Charlatans first album following the death of long-term keyboardist Rob Collins, who was tragically killed in a car accident in 1996. Music News Victoria Dillingham caught up with founding member and bass player, Martin Blunt ahead of the albums release. Now into their 23rd year the Levellers are a band that unlike most have always remained true to their roots and as a result have continued to garner a strong following for their no-nonsense approach to acoustic story-telling folk-rock music.Daniel Evans is not the typical X Factor contestant; in fact, when he made it to the live finals in 2008 he brought something different to the show.
