Submotion Orchestra popped up last year with an EP on Ranking Records, but have since obviously been working pretty hard, as this week they're dropping a full album, through Exceptional. It's rooted in dubstep(ish) but is the product of a full band; keys, vocals, live drums - so although it's framed in a dubstep context, there's a strong jazz and soul influence in there too; fans of K&D, Peshay, Jazzanova and so on would be well advised to check it out.
The overall vibe of the album is pretty blissed out and mellow - Skrillex fans won't find much here - but as a listening album it works really well, and when they step away from the Rhodes they do it with aplomb. 'Back Chat' in particular is a fantastic track, and is as good a piece of suspended cinematic menace as I've heard.
